The 50 States of America are located in the continent of North America – Alaska lies to the Northwest of Canada and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The remaining 48 States sit between Canada in the north and Mexico in the south. Together creating the World’s 3rd largest country in size.
The 50 States each have their own personality and offer unique travel opportunities, something to suit all of your travel goals – from the sunshine state of laid back California, to the rugged Pacific Northwest coastline of Washington State, the craziness of Las Vegas in Nevada, and the large cities of Texas. What I love the most about the USA are its National Parks, offering fantastic outdoors activities and places of incredible national beauty. What’s your favourite State?
California
California is one of the iconic states of the USA, known for its sunny year-round climate, palm trees, and liberal atmosphere. It stretches for 900 miles along the western coast of America, from Mexico in the south up to the border with Oregon in the north.
But it’s not all about the coast, taking an in-land route will allow you to visit some incredible national parks including Yosemite, Sequoia, Joshua tree and the Redwoods National Parks, to name but a few. Bliss!
Nevada
Nevada is an inland state in the west of the USA, largely comprised of dry, rocky or desert landscapes, including the Death Valley area which is one of the hottest places in the world. That said the north the state is more green, offering the beauty of Lake Tahoe.
However it is the city of Las Vegas which stands out in the state, literally rising out of the desert as a beacon of neon light – one of the most brightly lit places on earth. A city for adult entertainment – top quality restaurants, music, shows.
New England States
The region known as New England in the USA, is comprised of six states: Rhode Island (the smallest US state), Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
There are many draws to this region including: leaf peeping in the Fall, stunning Arcadia National Park, Coastal Maine for craggy coastline and lighthouses, pretty coastal towns and lobsters, the city of Boston with its rich maritime and Founding Fathers history and witchy Salem.
New York State
New York State, or the ‘Empire State’ is the 11th largest state in the US and offers a great variety of opportunities including the not to be missed and iconic New York City – yes, it looks just like the movies, but even better in real life!
Beyond the ‘Big Apple’, visit Niagara Falls in the north of the state or the beautiful beaches of Long Island. Go hiking in the Catskill or Adirondack mountains. Enjoy wine tasting in the Finger Lakes or farm to table dining in the Hudson Valley. You will never want to leave!
Texas
Texas is a huge state, in fact it is larger than the European country, France. Because it has lots of space, then some of its cities are also supersized – Dallas and Houston, so be prepared for long travel distances you are exploring.
There is certainly a lot to explore, from space travel in at the Houston Space Centre, history in Dallas at the 6th Floor Museum dedicated to JFK, live music in Austin. Throw in rodeos, cowboy hats, BBQs, Tex-mex food and there is a lot to love about Texas.
Washington
Washington State is known as the Evergreen State for its many evergreen forests, meaning that it is very green – even the city of Seattle is full of trees, and with its position overlooking Puget Sound, it is extremely pretty.
There are some cracking national parks in Washington State, including the Olympic National Park, North Cascades and Mount Rainier National Parks. If you love hiking, views and the great outdoors then this is the state for you. Dust off those hiking boots and explore…
