One week stays are the most common holidays, as it’s often the length of time people are able to book off work. It’s also the typical length of a school half term holiday, if you want to travel with your children during the year.
A week allows you to travel slightly further away from home, and to include both sightseeing and relaxation in your one week itinerary. From the UK, one week stays in Europe work perfectly, as do stays on the east coast of the USA where the jet lag is manageable in a week. Similarly, travelling the other way, the Middle East or North Africa are good options.
The Netherlands
Base yourself in Amsterdam to explore this beautiful city full of top art museums and picture perfect canals. Then head out of the city on the efficient trains for day trips to the Alkmaar Cheese Market, the windmills at Zaanse Schans, or the tulips fields round Keukenhof Gardens, to name but a few options to complete your one week stay.
Oman
Arrive into the magical city of Muscat, to orientate yourself and immerse yourself in Omani culture – visit the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, one of the heritage museums and pick up some treasures in the Souq. Then collect a hire car and head out into the mountains, or visit an historic fort or wadi, before sleeping under the stars on a desert stay.
Puglia, Italy
A taste of old Italy awaits you in Puglia. Although it has gained in popularity with foreign visitors in recent years, Puglia still feels authentic and untainted by tourism in most places. From rocky shorelines, to hilltop towns, the Baroque city of Lecce and unique town of Alberobello which is filled with cute trulli houses, there is a treat around every corner in Puglia.
Venice, Italy
This city needs no introduction – you will have seen Venice in books, on the TV and in the movies, but nothing can prepare you for experiencing this city on water first hand – the craziness of the boats on the waterways, the stunning buildings, the history and Renaissance art, and the light at sundown, all creates the dreamscape that is La Serenissima.
