The Netherlands is a country in Northwestern Europe bordering Belgium in the south, Germany to the east, and the North Sea to the west and north. It also has several overseas territories in the Caribbean, such as the Dutch Antilles. The country’s name translates as the ‘Low Countries’ as 26% of the Netherlands sits below sea level, hence the construction of dams, dikes and canals to keep the North Sea at bay.
There is much to love as a visitor to the Netherlands – the canals and flat landscape which is perfect for cycling, over 1,000 windmills, endless tulip fields which are stunning when in bloom, excellent cheeses, and the opportunity to see some incredible works of art by Van Gogh or the Dutch Masters, Rembrandt and Vermeer. Try to visit the Netherlands on a Festival Day, of which there are many, as the Dutch really know how to party!
Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a wonderful destination offering dreamy canal-scapes, cosy cafes with apple cake, endless shopping opportunities, a floating flower market, houseboats and historic canal side houses to explore, and top quality museums – Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum.
